“We, the Women of Ukuni, have lived in the dark under difficult conditions for far too long. We married men into the Ukuni Tribe, bore many children and lived by the day, with no plans for our lives and that of our children. That time has now passed and together we can make sure we have a better future”.

Ukuni Women’s Association was formed in 2010 to strengthen and empower women across seven local wards in the region. Coffee is the lifeline here. With limited roads and infrastructure, access to markets and services is never simple. Harvested coffee is stored at a central shed until transport becomes possible.

Today, 194 registered members and their families care for over 230 hectares and roughly 720,000 coffee trees. Alongside coffee production, the group supports small livestock and intercropping to build stability beyond a single income stream.

With support from PNG Coffee Exports, the association has received farming tools, field training, certification guidance and a dedicated training centre. The group is chaired by Racheal Joseph, who also works as a field officer, guiding farmers in husbandry and quality practices at village level.

This coffee is a product of their dedication to building something stronger than circumstance.
