Whole Bean vs Ground Coffee: Which Should You Buy?

The short answer

Whole beans stay fresh longer and let you set the grind for any method, but you need a grinder. Ground coffee is quicker and ready for your method, but loses its aroma faster once opened. No grinder? Buy ground in smaller bags, in the grind that matches how you brew.

It's the first choice on every bag of coffee: Whole Beans, or ground? Neither is wrong. It comes down to your gear, how you brew and how fast you get through a bag.

01

Why ground coffee goes stale faster

Grinding breaks each bean into hundreds of pieces, so far more of the coffee is exposed to the air. The aroma escapes faster and the oils react with oxygen sooner. Whole beans keep most of that locked inside until you grind them.

Which should you buy?

  • You have an espresso machine and a grinder: Whole Beans. Espresso is fussy about grind, and fresh-ground gives you the control to dial it in.
  • You have an espresso machine but no grinder: Ground Espresso. If your shots run too fast or slow, adjust the dose and tamp.
  • You use an AeroPress or moka pot: Ground Espresso.
  • You use a plunger or make cold brew: Ground Plunger.
  • You've got no gear at all: skip the grind question. Try capsules, Rip 'n Drip or Dunk Bags, or Killer Concentrate.
04

Getting the best from ground coffee

  • Buy smaller bags. Our 200g bags are about a week or two of coffee for one person.
  • Match the grind to your method. The wrong grind tastes worse than slightly stale coffee. See the grind chart.
  • Seal it every time. Squeeze the air out and keep it cool and dark.
  • Freeze what you won't use soon, in sealed portions. More in how to store coffee.

Thinking about a grinder? Get a burr grinder, not a blade one. Burrs give an even grind, which is the whole point.

The bottom line

Whole beans give you the freshest cup and full control, if you have a grinder. Ground coffee is the easy option, and it tastes great if you buy the right grind and get through it within a couple of weeks.

FAQ

Is whole bean coffee better than ground?

It stays fresh longer and lets you control the grind, so it can taste better. Ground coffee is more convenient, and it's very good if you use it within a couple of weeks.

How long does ground coffee last once opened?

It's at its best for about 1 to 2 weeks if it's sealed and kept cool and dark.

Can I grind coffee beans in a blender?

You can, but it gives an uneven mix of dust and chunks, which brews bitter and sour at once. A burr grinder is much better.

What grind should I buy for a plunger?

Ground Plunger: coarse, like rock salt.

What grind should I buy for an espresso machine?

Whole Beans if you have a grinder, otherwise Ground Espresso.

Does ground coffee have less caffeine than beans?

No. Grinding doesn't change the caffeine. It just loses aroma and flavour faster.
